EU obliges Greece to buy GM corn
Monsanto recently took another step toward controlling the planet’s food supply. Less than two weeks ago the European Commission ruled that Greece cannot ban the planting of MON 810 approved for cultivation by the European Union, a ruling that applies to all member states. This particular variety of genetically modified corn is produced in 17 different versions and was approved for circulation in 1988. On September 8, 2004, the European Commission included these specific varieties in the EU seed catalog, enabling them to be sold freely in all member states. In April 2005, the Agricultural Development Ministry banned the cultivation of MON 810 in Greece, but could not justify it on scientific grounds, the only way the EU would accept a ban. So last Tuesday the EU asked Greece to lift its embargo on the corn. Greece may appeal to the European Court of Justice, but it must still provide scientific evidence.
