New group behind 3 explosions
A new anarchist group claimed responsibility for three explosions across Athens yesterday, with police suspecting a link with Monday’s bloody bank robbery that left three people injured. Police said that two homemade bombs, consisting of gas canisters, went off almost simultaneously around 3 a.m. at a branch of the National Bank in central Athens and at a district office of the ruling New Democracy party in Zografou. Shortly afterward a third explosion went off under a municipal car in Nea Ionia, northern Athens. No one was injured in the attacks, which caused extensive damage. A group called Revolutionary Liberation Action called Skai Radio a few hours after the attacks to claim responsibility. Before the blasts, anarchists had sprayed slogans reading: «Banks are the true robbers» outside a bank that had been targeted in Monday’s heist. Police said that they were investigating a possible anarchist link with the heist that left a robber, a security guard and a passer-by wounded during a shootout with police.
