Soldier’s body to be dug up

Supreme Court prosecutor Dimitris Linos ordered authorities in northeastern Greece yesterday to exhume the body of an army conscript who was found dead on New Year’s Eve, following a request by his family, who refuse to accept that he committed suicide. The family of Dimitris Souras, 21, made the request to Linos after a coroner ruled that the soldier had shot himself. Souras’s parents are demanding that a coroner from Athens examine the body and that new ballistic tests be performed. Souras went missing from his military camp near Orestiada in the region of Evros on December 30. His body was found the next day, some 500 meters from a guard post. His family said that they have not been given the coroner’s report and claim there is no way Souras would have committed suicide. Linos instructed the local prosecutor’s office to arrange for a new autopsy.
