Annan told of Nicosia’s wariness

Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said yesterday that he spoke to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan about Nicosia’s reservations concerning Turkey’s latest proposal for restarting Cyprus reunification talks. The two men spoke on Friday night and discussed the proposal that was unveiled by Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul on Tuesday, Papadopoulos said. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with Annan on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos and claimed late on Friday that the head of the UN had a «positive attitude» to the Turkish proposals. Papadopoulos, however, said that Annan insisted he would simply examine Ankara’s ideas and then inform the relevant parties of his views. The two men are also said to have agreed to meet in March. Meanwhile, Cyprus Parliament Speaker Dimitris Christofias said on Saturday that Turkey’s suggestion of four-way talks involving Greece and Turkey as well as Turkish and Greek Cypriots was unacceptable to Nicosia.
