Lure of marriage and job proves irresistible

A man who allegedly promised at least three women that he would marry them and secure them a job in the civil service to swindle them out of some 20,000 euros was charged with attempted fraud by a prosecutor in Thessaloniki yesterday. The unnamed 45-year-old was arrested after being caught with 750 euros in marked notes that had been given to him by a 40-year-old woman he had been dating, police said. The woman claims she had already given him 3,100 euros. Officers said that the suspect is also thought to have tricked two other women over the last three years using the same method of promising that he would get hitched and find them jobs in the public sector. The two women gave the alleged con man some 16,500 euros based on these promises, officers said.
