Old US base

One of the largest projects undertaken by Nea Makri’s current administration is the refurbishment of 3 hectares (out of a total of 22) of the former American military base that stretches along an area bounded by the coast on one side and by the main road on the other. The site is already being used for a heated Olympic-size swimming pool, a municipal cinema, basketball court, tennis courts, a soccer field, open amphitheater and a youth information center. Open to all residents, the site has injected new life into what was for decades a waste ground. The municipality is now competing with the State Property Company for more land on the base to house the archaeology department of the Athens Technical Institute (TEI) in its already existing buildings. The Education Ministry has given its approval to the move and further developments are expected soon.
