Security firms flouting laws

Private security is one of Greece’s fastest-growing industries but the sector is riddled with employers dodging obligations to their staff, an industry source said yesterday. The general secretary of the Security Guards’ Union, Evangelos Pallis, told Kathimerini that many employers in the business do not pay overtime, cheat on social security payments and breach labor laws. «Most colleagues take to the streets and start work without having undergone one day of training,» Pallis said. About 1,000 companies employ an estimated 45,000 people in the sector, which Pallis says is growing annually at a rate of 27-30 percent. «(These problems) are attributable to the indifference shown by the state,» he said, adding that companies are cheating the state out of 80 million euros per year by keeping employees off the books.
