Poll points to Athens victory for Bakoyianni

Although she has still not publicly committed herself to running for mayor of Athens in October’s elections, most Athenians think New Democracy’s Dora Bakoyianni would win hands down, a newspaper poll found yesterday. According to the results of a survey in the conservative Sunday Eleftheros Typos, 74.8 percent of Athenians think Bakoyianni, the 48-year-old daughter of former Prime Minister Constantine Mitsotakis, would beat the ruling socialists’ official candidate, Christos Papoutsis. Only 16.3 percent voiced the opinion that Papoutsis, a 49-year-old former European Union energy and tourism commissioner, would beat Bakoyianni – were she to be ND’s official candidate in the ND stronghold. And out of a list of four possible candidate mayors, including Papoutsis, 44.8 percent named Bakoyianni as best for the job.
