Education ties Greece and China

Greece and China signed a three-year protocol agreement yesterday that will encourage closer development of education and research activities between the two countries. The agreement, to run from 2007-2010, will provide scholarships for Greek university students to study in China and vice versa. Additionally, the Greek and Chinese languages will be taught in each other’s country in government-certified courses while universities from both countries will work together on research projects. «Education is a pivotal point, the cooperation can pass on to other fields,» said Education Minister Marietta Giannakou after meeting with her Chinese counterpart Zhou Ji in Beijing. The minister’s trip to China follows a visit to the Asian country from Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis in January, where he held business and diplomatic talks with senior leaders. The hosting of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and the exchange of Games know-how has promoted cooperation between the two countries.
