FM calls for improved refugee asylum system

Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis yesterday called for improvements to Greece’s system of granting asylum to refugees as figures showed a drop in the number of refugees worldwide. Speaking on the occasion of World Refugee Day, Bakoyannis suggested that the drop in refugees was not necessarily a positive development. «We have comparatively fewer refugees but millions of people displaced within their countries. This shows that refugees regard fleeing as a last resort and not an end in itself,» the minister said. Meanwhile, Deputy Education Minister Giorgos Kalos awarded 30 students from schools nationwide for their essays on problems faced by refugees. «These essays show that… schoolchildren can be sensitized to social issues so racism is not passed on to the next generation,» Kalos said during a ceremony at the Foundation of the Hellenic World.
