Policemen arrested on extortion charges

Two police officers were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly demanding a fee from two transvestite prostitutes in order not to arrest them, the Public Order Ministry said yesterday. The two policemen, aged 23 and 25, from the narcotics squad, are suspected of taking 80 euros from each prostitute on Athinon Avenue in the early hours of Wednesday. The victims managed to obtain the details of one of the suspects and reported him to authorities. According to the ministry, the two officers are believed to have blackmailed the same prostitutes for 100 euros each some 20 days ago. Internal affairs is holding an investigation to determine whether the two suspects were guilty of the extortion of other streetwalkers.
