Paris Greek held for ‘scotch tape’ rapes

PARIS (AP) – An unemployed Greek man was placed under investigation and jailed on Wednesday in connection with more than a dozen sexual assaults and rapes of young Parisian girls, often carried out at schools by a man posing as a policeman. The suspect, identified only as Vassilios R., 36, unemployed with a police record, was placed under investigation – a step short of being charged – for rape of minors, rape using threat of arms and attempted assault, the Paris prosecutor said. The suspect was arrested on Sunday in a Right Bank neighborhood after assaulting a 12-year-old girl, officials said. DNA tests confirmed the man’s role in at least one of 13 cases, they added. A series of recent assaults and rapes on young girls under 15 raised tension in Paris school districts. Police referred to the suspect as the «the scotch man» because he used tape to cover the eyes of his victims.
