Police on the trail of hunting rifle thieves

Police are looking for a 22-year-old alleged soccer hooligan in connection with the theft of 12 hunting rifles and some 2,000 rounds of ammunition in northwest Athens three months ago, officers said yesterday. The unnamed suspect is one of four men believed to have raided a weapons store in Menidi. Officers recently arrested a 25-year-old man in connection with the heist after searching an apartment in Ilion, western Athens, where they found stolen gun parts. The unnamed man is said to have admitted his part in the robbery but refused to name his accomplices. However, police found the fingerprints of the 22-year-old on some of the gun parts and are now hunting for him. Officers believe that the gang was planning to use the guns in a series of bank heists. The hunting rifles have not yet been recovered.
