A police officer stands by in full riot gear yesterday in central Athens after protesting shipyard workers set fire to three roadside dumpsters outside the Employment Ministry, calling for payment of an extra allowance. Some 500 protesters were involved in the minor scuffles that broke out with riot police as they attempted to break into the building to meet with Labor Minister Savvas Tsitouridis. Authorities used tear gas to push back demonstrators. There were no reports of injuries or arrests.
