Bystander hurt after Roma feud spills over

A mass brawl yesterday involving about 30 people outside the main courthouse in Ioannina, northwestern Greece, led to a bystander being run over and seriously injured, police said. The fight broke out between two Roma, or Gypsy, families after the postponement of a trial. The case centered around an incident 10 years ago which led to members of the families being injured. During the melee 36-year-old Vassilis Panayiotopoulos drove his pickup into another vehicle carrying members of the rival family. He then lost control of the truck and hit an elderly pedestrian who was dragged along the road for several meters, officers said. The unnamed man was rushed to the hospital. Doctors said he was out of danger but in grave condition. Panayiotopoulos was arrested.
