Yogurt recall being probed

Dairy food giant FAGE was slow in notifying authorities that shards of glass may have fallen into its yogurt, the head of Greece’s food watchdog claimed yesterday as a prosecutor said he would investigate the incident. Ioannis Vlemmas, the president of the Hellenic Food Authority (EFET), said that a consumer had reported to FAGE on Friday that he had found glass in a pot of «Junior» yogurt for children. EFET said the dairy firm did not inform the watchdog until Monday – three days later. «After evaluating the results of an investigation into the incident and if any responsibility arises, the appropriate penalties will be imposed,» said Vlemmas. FAGE, Greece’s second-largest dairy company, said it has recalled all the pots that may have been affected when a protective glass barrier on a production line smashed. Meanwhile, Athens prosecutor Panayiotis Poulios said that he has ordered a probe into the matter to assess whether anybody should be charged.
