Bullying a risk at all schools
Incidents of bullying among students are not linked to one’s social or economic class and can arise at any school, said Education Minister Marietta Giannakou yesterday. Giannakou told a parliamentary committee on education that an equal number of violent incidents among students occur at both private and public schools, according to a ministry study. «Aggressive and violent attitudes are exhibited at all schools, regardless of the economic or social profile of the parents,» she said. «No matter how well teachers are trained or how many psychologists you have at schools, today’s family environment does not allow for adequate handling of the problem,» she added. The discussion on violence at schools was prompted by a recent case of the alleged rape of a schoolgirl by four fellow students in Amarynthos, on the island of Evia.
