Small snags hit pay parking

A parking fee system for central Athens came into effect yesterday, with drivers accusing the City Council of poorly preparing the groundwork for the new measures aimed at taming chaotic traffic. Motorists can now only park in the city center in certain color-coded spaces and pay a fee through either via a mobile phone or by purchasing a card from a kiosk. According to press reports yesterday, parking cards were not available at many kiosks, while many drivers claimed that they had not been informed of the new measures. «Of course, as with every new measure, the first day is always difficult and weaknesses will exist,» said Athens Mayor Theodoros Behrakis. Others criticized the City Council for failing to allow for any flexibility on the first day. Sources said that authorities issued 300 parking tickets yesterday.
