Terrorist squad called in for spear-gun threat

Authorities called in the anti-terrorism squad to a village outside Xanthi, northern Greece, to disarm a 28-year-old man who was threatening to shoot his neighbors with a spear gun, police said yesterday. The suspect, who suffers from psychological problems, had locked himself in his house in the village of Mangana on Monday afternoon and threatened his neighbors from his balcony while waving the spear gun. Earlier, police said, the suspect had stolen a hunting rifle and shotgun from his uncle and fired more than 50 shots at street lamps and signs, without injuring anyone. The EKAM anti-terrorism unit was called in late on Monday evening and charged the home yesterday morning after calls from a police negotiator for the man to surrender failed. Police also found a chainsaw in the man’s possession.
