Car rental fees dodged in cross-border scam

A Greek businessman is accused of hiring transport trucks in Germany and dumping them in northern Greece in order to dodge paying the rental charge in a scam costing hundreds of thousands of euros, police said yesterday. The unnamed suspect, aged 40, had hired nine vehicles, including four trucks, from different rental companies in Germany and used them to transport goods. After completing the transport operation, the suspect would abandon the vehicles in a vacant lot in the area of Kalohori, Thessaloniki. The man operated his own transport company in Germany which was involved in cross-border moves. According to authorities, the total rental costs owed from the operation amounted to -210,000.
