Woman held in baby theft

A British woman has been detained on the Ionian island of Cephalonia after allegedly stealing the baby girl she was planning to buy from a 16-year-old Romanian mother in Athens last week, police said on Saturday. The unnamed woman was detained after returning the infant to a local clinic, saying she was unable to take care of the child because of psychological problems, The Associated Press reported, citing a police statement. The infant was not harmed. The Romanian mother reported the baby theft on Thursday as she was negotiating to sell her child for -14,000 in Omonia, central Athens. However, the British woman allegedly snatched the infant and disappeared without giving the teenager the money. Police said that the British woman was expected to appear before a public prosecutor in Athens on charges of stealing an infant.
