Police stations’ security upped

Parts of streets in front of Athens police stations are being closed to protect the buildings against attacks from self-styled anarchists, sources revealed yesterday. The sources said that work is under way to strengthen security at some seven police stations and the force’s headquarters. This plan involves the positioning of concrete barriers around the buildings, as seen at some embassies. Police chiefs decided on the move after last week’s attack by a group of some 15 anarchists on a police station in Papagou, northeast Athens. The assailants threw firebombs at the building and destroyed two patrol cars. Officers had discovered anarchists discussing plans online to attack more police stations in the near future. Officers said they will only close off the area in front of police stations if the roads are wide enough to allow a suitable buffer zone. Otherwise they will block the whole street.
