Latest round of EU expansion analyzed

Romania’s and Bulgaria’s first European commissioners believe that the Balkan countries, which became members of the European Union on January 1, will have a positive impact on the 27-nation bloc. «The fifth European enlargement will be a success story and the spillover effects on the whole region will be very significant,» said Meglena Shtilianova Kuneva, Bulgaria’s first European commissioner. Kuneva’s thoughts as well as those of her Romanian counterpart Leonard Orban, among others, will be published in the quarterly magazine The Bridge, available free with tomorrow’s Kathimerini English Edition. Orban writes that Romania will help to expand relations in Southeast Europe and contribute to projects «related to energy and transport corridors, environmental protection or fighting organized crime.»
