Meter keeps on ticking in costly taxis

Commuters will have to pay price rises of more than double the inflation rate if they want to catch a cab today – as a set of fare hikes, which the government has agreed to, kicks in. The minimum fare has risen by 6 percent – from 2.50 to 2.65 euros in Athens and Thessaloniki. In other cities, the minimum amount that a passenger will have to pay is 2.85 euros. Anyone traveling to Athens International Airport will have to pay an extra 3.20 euros as opposed to 3 euros. The charge for each kilometer covered by the cab rises by 6.3 to 6.7 percent depending on the time of day. Taxis will also charge 9.10 euros per hour when they are stuck in traffic and not moving – a 7.1 percent rise from the previous rate. However, commuters using the Proastiakos suburban railway from today will be able to take advantage of the lower prices announced last week.
