FATAL ROBBERY

Passer-by shot dead during raid on goldsmith’s store in Piraeus An attempt by two Moldovan nationals to rob a goldsmith’s store in Piraeus yesterday resulted in the death of a passer-by and the serious injury of the store owner. An exchange of fire between the shop owner and robbers fatally injured a 64-year-old pedestrian who had been walking past the store as the would-be robbers tried to flee. The pair were arrested. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Women told to use legal rights On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Justice Minister Anastassis Papaligouras yesterday encouraged women who are victims of domestic violence to take advantage of recent legislation and report their husbands or partners. «We call on every woman… to exercise the rights that the new law gives them. Our aim is to have no more persecutors or victims in any Greek family,» said Papaligouras. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court sent a circular to prosecutors’ offices yesterday recommending that a specific prosecutor from each office be appointed to handle cases of domestic violence. Alex investigation Two more of the five schoolboys accused of killing 11-year-old Alex Meshivili were yesterday given extensions to testify before the Thessaloniki prosecutor investigating the case. The two brothers, aged 12 and 13, will have to testify on March 22 and 23. Two other schoolboys have been given until March 20. The fifth child is due to be questioned next Tuesday. Smuggler nabbed Coast guard officers yesterday chased down and arrested a suspected migrant trafficker from Turkey near the eastern Aegean island of Samos, the Merchant Marine Ministry said. The Turkish national allegedly dropped off 17 Afghan migrants from a motor boat in the early hours of the morning. Officers in a patrol boat who witnessed the operation gave chase and caught up with the unnamed man shortly afterward. Drug arrests Border guards and police in northeastern Greece have seized almost 220 kilos of cannabis and arrested five people in three separate operations over the last 24 hours, authorities said yesterday. The five men arrested are all Albanian nationals and they were caught on country roads in the areas of Thesprotia, Ioannina and Arta.
