Meeting with new UN head
Foreign Minister Bakoyannis begins her tour in New York, where she will have talks with new UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. She will explore his intentions regarding the next moves on the Cyprus issue – the potential for a new initiative in the search for a solution and whether this will be similar to the rejected Annan proposal or will take a fresh approach. However, Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul has pre-empted Bakoyannis and already presented Turkey’s positions to the new UN secretary-general two months ago. The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and Kosovo are also issues of interest to Greece that are currently on the UN agenda and where developments are expected forthwith.
