More firefighters and equipment on the way for relief
The Greek Fire Brigade is to increase its manpower and aerial firefighting power, according to Public Order Minister Vyron Polydoras, who has announced the lease of three large helicopters. Fire Brigade Chief Andreas Kois told Kathimerini that consideration is being given to rent the helicopters for a longer period, given that this year’s firefighting season is to be extended. Kois also announced that 540 more permanent firefighters are to be recruited for three new stations at Megara, Markopoulo and Pallini, among others. Members of firefighting unions affiliated with the opposition party say they fear for the operational capacity of the force since the recent retirement of 66 percent of the most experienced officers in the force.
