Officers may get off lightly
Five police officers appearing in mobile phone video footage allegedly mistreating detainees in Neos Cosmos, near central Athens, are likely to get off with disciplinary action only, sources said yesterday. The five officers in the video are seen forcing two transvestite prostitutes to perform erotic dances. An investigation into the incident is expected to be completed by the end of the week but a police internal affairs source said there is no evidence that the two detainees had been forced to dance. The Greek police have come under heavy criticism recently after another cell phone video clip showed an officer beating two Albanian detainees and then forcing them to strike each other at the Omonia precinct in central Athens. An investigation into the Omonia incident is continuing.
