Attack linked to robber trial

With the trial of accused bank robber Yiannis Dimitrakis approaching this Friday, a group of around 30 youths attacked a building on Syngrou Avenue in southern Athens yesterday in support of the suspect. The assailants attacked a building belonging to Ethniki Insurance with stones, wooden poles and sledgehammers, causing extensive damage. No one was hurt in the incident and there were no reports of arrests. After the attack, the youths left behind pamphlets calling for Dimitrakis, aged 29, to be released before taking refuge in nearby Panteion University. Dimitrakis has been remanded in custody and is awaiting trial for his alleged involvement in a gang called Robbers in Black, believed to have held up a National Bank branch in central Athens last January that led to three people being injured in the ensuing shootout. He is also accused of money laundering and organizing gangs.
