‘We won’t be able to breathe’

Former merchant marine captain and Glyfada resident Pavlos Lekkas commented: «Nobody cares about the mountain. A land-grabber won’t take private land but state forestland. Hymettus keeps falling prey to land-grabbers, areas are fenced off and houses spring up. The municipality should do something but does nothing. It gives out certificates so that people can get electricity supply illegally. In its platform, it states, ‘Let’s put an end to this disgraceful state of affairs and incorporate the plots outside the town plan.’ But isn’t it more disgraceful that we cut down the trees and soon won’t be able to breathe?» Government indifferent «The mountain has been burnt twice and nobody takes action. «We hear of court cases and convictions but no new measures. Nobody guards or protects the mountain. Trash is dumped, fences go up, illegal houses are built, electricity is connected and nobody is concerned, neither the municipality nor the state. «The government is indifferent,» said Lambrini Satou, a lawyer and Glyfada resident.
