5-mln-euro shipment of cocaine netted

The coast guard has seized a 51-kilo haul of cocaine on board a Bahamas-flagged cargo ship at the Corinthian Gulf port of Aigion valued at some 5 million euros, the Merchant Marine Ministry said yesterday. Three of the ship’s officers were arrested and 24 crew members were being questioned, the ministry added. «Merchant Marine Minister Manolis Kefaloyiannis congratulates the coast guard… for coordinated efforts that have brought impressive results, namely the smashing of a major narcotics network operating in our country,» the ministry said in a statement. The ship, the Coral Sea, had arrived in Greece from Italy after initially sailing from Ecuador with a cargo of bananas. Port police arrested the Lithuanian captain, his Filipino chief engineer and a Filipino boatswain.
