A marble slab is raised by a forklift truck in front of the Parthenon yesterday. Guards on the Acropolis have called off a four-day strike that was set to begin on Saturday. Their union said that the government had agreed to consider some of their demands, including better pay for working six days a week and at night. Thousands of tourists were turned away from the Acropolis last weekend because of action by the guards that kept the ancient temple shut, prompting complaints from tour operators.
