Kosovo: ‘If a few more months are needed, so be it’

Do you think the final status of Kosovo should be the «internationally supervised independence» suggested by UN mediator Martti Ahtisaari? The plan should be the basis of a compromise solution. If necessary, there should be a few more months of negotiations. Has the status virtually been decided? Moscow is opposing it, and recently its former Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov suggested dividing the region. It is regrettable when one country raises obstacles to what appears to be the basis for a compromise solution. Having said that, I repeat what I said earlier. If a few more months are needed, then so be it. I recently met with Serbian President Boris Tadic in Brussels and the leaders of Kosovo’s Albanians. We believe the plan should be the basis of a compromise solution. However, the situation worries me.
