Two killed as truck slams into bridge

A truck driver and his assistant met a grisly death in southern Athens yesterday morning when their lorry smashed into a pedestrian bridge. One of the men was propelled into the Kifissos River while the other burned to death in the vehicle. The accident happened at around 4 a.m. on the national road, in the suburb of Rendi. The truck was heading toward Piraeus when the driver lost control of the vehicle. After crashing into the bridge, the truck immediately caught fire. There were no pedestrians on the bridge at the time. The force of the impact ejected the passenger into the river, from where rescue workers recovered his body. The driver was trapped in the cab of the truck and his body was removed from the wreckage once firefighters had put out the blaze. Neither of the dead men was named.
