Tourist facing jail over bite
A British tourist was jailed for 14 months on the island of Rhodes yesterday after being found guilty of biting a policeman and ripping the officer’s shirt after a heavy drinking session in the resort of Faliraki. The unnamed 21-year-old was arrested at around 2 a.m. yesterday outside a bar in Faliraki, a resort on the Dodecanese island that is particularly popular with young British tourists and which has developed a reputation for drunken antics. The police had been called because the young man was being rowdy, the court heard. When the officers arrived, the 21-year-old started swearing and grabbed one of the policemen by the shirt and bit him in the thigh. The Briton was immediately arrested. He was found guilty of causing damage to other people’s property, resisting arrest, using abusive language and causing bodily harm. The 21-year-old appealed the decision and was released from custody.
