Firefighters wait…

The shadows of birds are seen on the paving stones in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens as firefighters wait to lay wreaths in memory of nine of the their colleagues who were killed trying to put out wildfires this summer. Some 1,500 firefighters who attended the ceremony demanded better pay (their starting salary is 670 euros per month) and improved training and equipment. Since 1994, 22 firefighters have been killed in the line of duty.
