Study sees increase in clubbers’ cocaine use

One in four Athenians aged between 15 and 30 has taken cocaine at least once, claims a study carried out by Greek scientists last year. Of 168 patrons at Athens nightclubs questioned by the National Center of Documentation and Information for Drugs (EKTEPN), 25 percent claimed to have tried cocaine at least once. The sample used for the study is relatively small. But the rate of 25 percent is double that of 11.9 percent who responded to a similar survey in 1998. According to the study, cannabis is the most popular drug, with 65 percent of respondents claiming to have used it and 15.5 percent claiming to use it once a week. Cocaine and ecstasy are the next most popular drugs. The study noted a drop in drug-related deaths, down to 273 last year, compared to 314 in 2005.
