Bank vault emptied in Easter Sunday heist
Employees at EFG Eurobank in Kifissia, northern Athens, returned to work yesterday morning after the Easter break to find 300,000 euros in cash missing from the vault. In a heist that took place on Sunday, police said the thieves entered the premises through a window after disabling the alarm system and opened the vault using drills and axes. A fire alarm did go off as they entered the premises, prompting a patrol car to visit the bank, but police left the branch after seeing from the exterior that there were no signs of a blaze. Authorities said the thieves opened numerous safe deposit boxes at the bank but did not remove the contents, including valuable jewelry, which indicates they were after something specific. Police are continuing their investigation.
