Monastiraki overhaul nears completion
Construction work on Monastiraki Square, one of central Athens’s busiest hubs and tourist hotspots, is proceeding apace as it races toward a September deadline. The long-awaited renovation of the square finally began last November after a four-year delay, and is expected to extend to an historic fountain whose base was found on the site of Hadrian’s Library. Beautification plans also include the removal of unsightly kiosks.
