Child migrant fate a worry

A total of 6,031 unaccompanied child migrants have been detained this year and 1,153 deported, according to an Interior Ministry document seen by Kathimerini. The revelation coincides with the publication of a new report by international lobby group Human Rights Watch referring to a «systematic» failure by Greek authorities to protect hundreds of underage migrants struggling to eke out a living in Greece. «Instead of making sure they’re being cared for, officials leave them living on the street without any assistance whatsoever,» researcher Simone Troller said. Troller said she had spoken with children as young as 10 waiting in queues outside the Aliens Bureau on Petrou Ralli Street, who said they were struggling to get by. «They work in dangerous and exploitative jobs, they beg, and they live in squalid places or sleep in parks,» she said. The report also refers to the alleged abuse of children by coast guard officials and police officers.Troller quotes several children claiming to have been beaten or terrorized.
