Olympus standing tall in seven wonders vote
Mount Olympus, Greece’s highest peak and the legendary home of the ancient Greek gods, has been selected as one of 261 candidates for the second phase of the worldwide New Seven Wonders of Nature contest. The mountain was the only Greek candidate to make it through to the first phase of online voting at www.new7wonders.com, which featured 440 proposals from around the world. Other Greek sites such as Meteora, Santorini and the petrified forest on Lesvos were eliminated. Olympus must now secure as many votes as possible by July 7 to be shortlisted among the final 21 candidates for the seven titles. The competition is being run by the New7Wonders organization, which held a vote last year for new Seven Wonders of the World, attracting more than 100 million votes.
