Athens warns Turkey after F-16s approach Greek passenger jet Government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros yesterday called on Ankara to curb the provocative behavior of Turkish jets in the Aegean after two F-16s entered Greek national air space just a few kilometers from a Greek passenger aircraft en route to the northeastern port of Alexandroupolis from Athens. «Turkey must put a stop to behavior that is unsuitable to its European orientation and with the allied relationship it wishes to maintain with us,» Antonaros said. The Aegean Airlines flight, with 91 people aboard, reached its destination safely. OFFICER RECOVERING Terror victim out of danger The 21-year-old police officer seriously injured in a terrorist attack in Exarchia earlier this month was yesterday removed from intensive care following an improvement in his condition. Doctors said Diamantis Mantzounis, who underwent two operations to staunch a stomach hemorrhage caused by a bullet wound, is now out of danger. Weapons found Police in Thessaloniki yesterday were examining three automatic weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition discovered in an abandoned car in the district of Polichni. Police believe that the weapons – two AK-47s and a Chinese-made assault rifle – had been abandoned by weapons smugglers. The vehicle had been reported stolen in June 2008, officers said. Acid attack A prosecutor investigating the attack on cleaner and unionist Constantina Kuneva yesterday sent back the file compiled by police and asked them to investigate further. Kuneva is still recovering after having acid thrown at her in December. Prosecutor Eleni Raikou asked officers to question more witnesses and conduct further forensic tests. Piraeus murder A 38-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman are due to appear in court today on suspicion of shooting a man dead in broad daylight on a Piraeus street earlier this month. The 26-year-old victim was shot three times in front of several witnesses on January 12. Police said they found more than 600 grams of heroin at the apartment where the two suspects were arrested and police believe that the killing was drug-related. Suicide prevented Police said yesterday that they may have prevented, in separate cases, two students from committing suicide after they posted messages online claiming they were considering killing themselves. Officers said that the postings were discovered two weeks ago and that the students were traced and their parents informed. One set of parents admitted to authorities that their child had been troubled by a relationship breakup. Police said that 22 possible suicides have been prevented in this manner over the last three years. Bridge death A 28-year-old man who was working on a bridge in Malakasio, near Trikala in central Greece, plunged some 100 meters to his death yesterday. The worker, who was not named, fell out of a lift basket after he and two colleagues used gasoline to start a fire to keep warm. The 28-year-old’s clothes caught fire, he panicked and fell out of the basket, according to authorities.
