Derelict building’s roof collapses, injuring six

Six Pakistani immigrants were injured yesterday when the roof of the derelict storehouse in which they had been residing, in the central district of Kolonos, collapsed while they were sleeping. Police were alerted by other Pakistanis living in an adjacent apartment block, also derelict. The residents of the building, who told Kathimerini they pay 200 euros a month in rent, said they were awoken by a loud bang before hearing their compatriots calling for help. «To have been living there, they obviously didn’t have money for rent,» Mohammed Arset, one of the residents, said. Police were questioning one of the building’s owners. Residents say dozens more buildings in the area are unstable. Last month, an 18-year-old Romanian woman was killed when the roof collapsed on the storehouse where she had been sleeping in Messinia, in the Peloponnese.
