Cabbie fleeing police hit by oncoming car

A 38-year-old Athens taxi driver was in hospital with serious injuries yesterday after being hit by a car in his attempt to flee from a policeman who caught him choosing customers at a taxi rank in an intercity coach depot. The father of four was one of four drivers stopped by plainclothes officers who visited the capital’s main coach depot on Kifissou Avenue on Wednesday night. The four cabbies are alleged to have been choosing between passengers from a line, which is illegal. It emerged that the 38-year-old had had his license revoked 10 days earlier for exactly the same offense. Two of the drivers cooperated with the police, the third got into his vehicle and drove off and the fourth ran into the road. One of the officers said he started chasing the cabbie but then turned back, noting that the 38-year-old jumped over the roadside barrier into oncoming traffic.
