Eight years in jail for Voutsis

A self-styled anarchist and the son of a Synaspismos Left Coalition politician, Giorgos Voutsis, was sentenced to eight years in prison for the armed robbery of a bank in Gyzi, central Athens, in October 2007. The court found him guilty of robbery and illegally carrying a weapon. Voutsis was caught while carrying a firearm and a hand grenade. «I apologize to the customers and bank employees for the five seconds that I acted like those in power,» said the 23-year-old, who admitted that the incident had a huge effect on his family. «I do not regret my action but I would not do such a thing again.» Voutsis insisted that his aim had not been to steal money but to harm the banking system. He said that he and his accomplices, none of whom have been caught, had not thought about what to do with the money. The court rejected an appeal for a reduced term due to his good behavior since being arrested.
