‘Beated’ Kurd prompts probe
Port authorities yesterday ordered an urgent investigation into claims that a 29-year-old Kurdish immigrant was violently beaten by officers at the northwestern port of Igoumenitsa more than two weeks ago. The migrant was yesterday in a critical condition in a Thessaloniki hospital. According to human rights groups, the 29-year-old was beaten by the port officials after trying to hide on a truck that had been waiting to board a ferry to Italy. The groups said that news of the beating was not made public until this week. Port officials have disputed the rights groups’ claims, claiming that the migrant sustained facial injuries after falling over. After being transferred to hospital after the beating, doctors determined that the migrant suffered from a serious form of epilepsy and had not taken his medicine for several days.
