Police on the Cycladic island of Ios said yesterday that they had detained a 37-year-old employee of the municipal authority’s accounting office alleged to have battered a 59-year-old municipal employee to death with a hammer after she discovered that he had been pocketing a portion of her salary. The 37-year-old is alleged to have admitted to the killing, which took place on May 4 outside a municipal day-care center where the victim worked as a cook. He was arrested on Monday, a week after the attack, and was to face a Naxos prosecutor yesterday on murder charges. According to police, the suspect had been keeping the woman’s salary increase for himself. After noticing the gap in her payments, she asked municipal authorities for a breakdown of her salary. A few days later, she was found dead at the day-care center with multiple head wounds.
