30-year anniversary…
Former French President Valery Giscard d’Estaing points upward as he sits next to Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis at a function in Athens yesterday that was organized by the Constantine Karamanlis Foundation. The event was held to mark next week’s 30-year anniversary since Greece joined the European Union (then the European Economic Community) under the premiership of Constantine Karamanlis, the current prime minister’s late uncle. D’Estaing played a vital role in helping secure Greece’s place within the union before being replaced by Jacques Chirac in 1981.
