Woman, 54, dies after intruder in home attempts to rape her A 54-year-old woman suffered a fatal heart attack after an unidentified intruder broke into her home in the central Athens neighborhood of Kypseli and tried to rape her, police said. Neighbors called the police after hearing the cries of the 54-year-old. An ambulance transferred her to the hospital where she died shortly afterward, reportedly of heart failure. Doctors gave no further details about the circumstances of the attack nor whether the woman had any history of heart trouble. SEA RESCUE Turkish sailors saved off Lesvos Coast guard divers rescued two Turkish men from their foundering sailboat off the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos earlier this week, reports in the Turkish media revealed yesterday. According to the reports, strong winds swept the boat away from the Turkish coastline and toward the Greek island, where it hit a rock and started sinking. Officials spotted it from the coast and sent divers to the rescue. Addicts’ brawl A man was transferred to the hospital with stab wounds to the chest yesterday following a brawl in central Athens between two drug addicts. It was unclear yesterday how serious the man’s injuries were. Speaking to Skai Radio after the incident, Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos pledged the swift relocation of the Omonia branch of the Organization Against Drugs (OKANA), which supplies recovering heroin addicts with methadone. Burned corpse A man whose charred remains were recovered on Wednesday night from the fourth-floor apartment he had been renting in the southern district of Kallithea is believed to have been murdered, police said yesterday. The burned body of the man, an Iraqi national whose age was unclear, had been bound, according to police, who said a knife was found beside the body. The owner of the apartment said he had heard music and voices there on Tuesday afternoon and had presumed the Iraqi had visitors. Smuggler arrests Four Iraqi nationals, one of whom is suspected of smuggling the other three into the European Union, were arrested at Athens International Airport as they attempted to travel on forged Bulgarian passports, police said yesterday. Meanwhile, police in Kapandriti, some 30 kilometers north of Athens, said another Iraqi was arrested after officers stopped the car in which he was traveling and found three illegal Afghan immigrants inside. ATM targeted Would-be robbers used a truck crane to try and remove a cash-dispensing machine from the facade of a branch of National Bank in Thessaloniki early yesterday but were spotted by residents who scared them off. The crane had been stolen from the outskirts of Kavala, police said. Kythera quake A moderate undersea quake, measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale, occurred off the southern coast of the island of Kythera, south of the Peloponnese, just before dawn yesterday. There were no reports of any damage or injuries.
