Unrest returns to in Exarchia

Four young men arrested following clashes between police and suspected members of anarchist groups in the central district of Exarchia early yesterday were beaten by officers, the lawyers for the four defendants told Kathimerini, noting that one of the men had to be hospitalized for treatment. The unrest in Exarchia began at around 2 a.m. following the arrest of a 19-year-old alleged to have been spray-painting graffiti on a wall. Police said they were pelted with Molotov cocktails, stones and bottles by a group of youths, resulting in minor injuries to three officers. After calling for backup, members of the riot police squad and Delta rapid reaction force arrived to help them. In the end, they arrested four men, aged between 21 and 29. The men now face criminal charges due to the alleged use of Molotov cocktails but their lawyers insist that they were not involved in the attacks on officers.
